Gloucester Street Feedermain Sliplining

In 1997, the Region of Ottawa-Carleton identified the existing 914 mm watermain in Gloucester Street as a candidate for rehabilitation. The 1.3 kilometer watermain had failed twice in recent years; once in 1981 and again in 1992, both resulting in significant damage.

The project proceeded to construction in April, 1999 and was completed by July 1999. A number of benefits were derived from the project including: 1) improved water system reliability, 2) significant capital and social cost savings and recognition for selecting an innovative approach to the problem, 3) less disruption to community, 4) minimal impact on traffic & roadway, 5) environmental impact reduced, 6) new rehabilitation technique developed.

Glen Cairn Trunk Sewer Pilot Biofilter

The Glen Cairn Trunk Sewer has been a source of odours since it was put into service in 1998. High concentrations of hydrogen sulphide gas have historically been observed at the manholes near its upstream end.

Robinson Consultants, in conjunction with the Ainley Group and Odor and Corrosion Technology Consultants Inc., was commissioned to operate and monitor the pilot biofilter on behalf of the City of Ottawa.  The monitoring will permit the optimal performance criteria to be used in the design of the permanent biofilter, which is to be constructed at the same location as the pilot biofilter.

Assessment, Rehabilitation and Replacement of Three Large
Diameter Feedermains in the City of Ottawa

The “A”, “B” and “C” watermains are three of the most important and among the oldest large diameter feedermains in the City of Ottawa’s water distribution system.  They are the sole supply pipes conveying water from the Lemieux Island Water Purification Plant and ultimately supply 60% of the City`s population.  The City of Ottawa’s potable water supply system dates to 1874 and now includes two large water purification plants and a distribution network comprised of over 2400 km (1500 miles) of pipe supplying a population of over 804,000 people.

The study was initiated and undertaken in recognition of the inherent risks stemming from uncertainty about the condition and structural integrity of the ageing pipes.  In addition, the study stems from a need to provide additional capacity for future growth, to accommodate urban renewal objectives in proximity to the location of the existing pipes and to enhance operational flexibility.
